Seasonal affective disorder?

The past several years I've noticed that January and February are not the happiest months for me.  I'm hoping the vitamin D a doctor advised helps.  Pretty dang sure the chocolate chip cookies will.

Bittersweet or milk chocolate chips for you?

  1. I am loving the sunshine today cuz I get a little stir crazy these months too. I am also loving chocolate chip cookies this week, but we have three left each, so I'll have to bake more tomorrow. Definitely bittersweet for me!

  2. Bittersweet. Always.

The chocolate chip banana muffins I made the kids yesterday are almost gone. Maybe cookies are in order today.

  3. Mmmmm. I am going to go bake now...

I suffer from SAD pretty badly. The massive doses of vitamin D help me out tons, and I've gotten great results from light boxes. Have you tried that as well? Simulated sunlight will also help the vitamin D synthesize in your body if you can't get the real stuff...

  6. Bittersweet for sure. My doctor just prescribed vitamin D for me two months ago and I can definitely tell the difference if I forget to take it for a couple of days.

Sending warm, sunny thoughts your way!

  9. Either! And I can relate regarding January and February! I think I've at least filled up with tears, if not out and out balling my head off at least every other day for the past six weeks! (Of course, menopause might have a tad bit to do with that in my case) Good luck with the Vitamin D - can't hurt anyway, right? And that Ferris Wheel quilt is fantastic! That's a little pick-me-up just looking at it!

  11. January and February are hard for me too. I have a recommendation, get vitamin D pills that come from a whole food source, your body will absorb it better. Regular vitamins go straight through your body, so you are just wasting your money. I found some at a health food store. Mine are Garden of Life brand and the ingredients look something like this: organic strawberry, organic cherry, organic blackberry, and on and on, there was just a ton of organic fruit and vegetable ingredients.
Also, when there is sunshine, go soak some of it up (without sunscreen) that's where vitamin D comes from the sun!

    And definitely bittersweet chocolate chips!

  25. Mmmm, bittersweet please, but Hey I wouldn't want to hurt the milk chocolate chips feelings by leaving him out too! LOL It was a beautiful bright sunny day here, and I was stuck in the office all day working! Bummer, roll on spring p'leeeeease!

  26. Maybe I'll try that too. I'm from California and just moved to Massachusetts in early December. I'm in a major funk mood. It's really starting to get on my husband's nerves. I've been eating a lot of sweets and now my pants are getting tight. Ooops

  29. Chocolate Chip here! I absolutely love them still warm and gooey, fresh out of the oven. Mmhmm... I agree with you, I've definitely got the winter blah's going on here too!

  30. I would prefer dark chocolate chips if I can find them. But any chocolate chips are good (and I will say that "white chocolate' is NOT chocolate!) There I said it, go ahead and sent the hate mail.
    Ha ha.

  31. Ohh... yum - bittersweet! I know what I'm doing when I get the chance this weekend! (too busy until Sunday most likely!)

  32. I suffer from SAD also. The one thing I do that helps if finding sun shine and soaking it up. Like a cat or dog, you know how they lay in a sun spot on the floor. That is me. But I usually just stand in the window. When I drive and there is sun, I will pull up my shirt sleaves. My Mom calls it Vitamin S, SUN! I will take either flavore of chip, I am not picky. Thank you for the cookie!

  33. Whatever kind of chocolate I happen to be eating is my favorite! Sorry you are feeling blah. I would be interested to see if you notice a difference taking vitamin D.

  34. I guess a doctor somewhere did a study on the effects of Vitamin D on his crew. The results showed definite improvement and no one was sick during January and February!!

I think I will be picking some up real soon.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I mix em half n half :) January and February are always hard for me, too. I may try VitD and maybe some VitB, too.

  36. I love me the traditional semi-sweet.

Growing up in Las Vegas I was used to year-round awesome weather. I moved 4 hours north and 4500 feet higher (so I'm at 6500 ft). The winters are cold and long and too much for me. I've never thought about vit. D, I just make a friend chat with me on the phone or hang out for a few hours. It does wonders for me.

  37. My Gynecologist PA had my vit D level tested last year, and it was 16--which is very deficient. It should be over 30, and she prefers it to be 40 or above. Here is an article I linked to in my blog last year after a week or so on Vit D:
    http://www.womentowomen.com/healthynutrition/vitamind.aspx

Amazing, right? A week on Vit. D and I could really tell the difference! Besides the gray months, I am also a night shift worker, which makes it that much harder to get any sunshine.

So pass the D and the chocolate chip cookies, please!

  38. I've heard that a Vitamin D deficiency is the latest trendy thing for doctors to diagnose, but I hope it works for you!

    And cookies can't hurt!

  39. By looking at that photo, looks like you are on the right track. Dark chocolate all the way! Winter makes us appreciate summer, I guess. Is it summer yet?

  40. Chocolate is Chocolate. bring it on. any will do. We had the sun shine here yesterday and that was a beautiful thing. Enjoy your cookies and warm your heart with how much we love you:)

  41. milk....Yum I'm going to go make some now!

  42. Oh definitely bittersweet! The darker the better, its full of anti-oxidents you know so it's got to be good for you!

  43. I would love to see the sun too. This snow/sleet-turning to rain-turning to mud is getting old!
But I would totally eat that cookie dough.

  44. Vitamin D can make a huge difference! I think I've been deficient since childhood and that it created some additional issues. I found the information available from the Life Extension Foundation invaluable. I started looking into it over a year ago when I was taking 5000 units a day and still came up deficient in tests. Can't believe how much better I feel--although I have to admit that after a week of snow, wind, and record setting temperature, chocolate helps too!

  45. Hmm...milk chocolate, oatmeal and coconut! yum yum must make some tomorrow.

  46. What? You can take Vitamin D for SAD??? Why didn't anyone TELL me?? Jan and Feb are killer for me. I'm getting me some vitamins now! So glad to see your post!

I like bittersweet but my husband will only dine on milk chocolate so I compromise. For him. ;)

  47. How about some really dark chocolate....say 90% dark......so yummy......

    ReplyDelete
  48. Dark chocolate, all the way. The darker the better.

And I SWEAR by Vitamin D supplements. :) Hope they work well for you!!

  49. I totally hear ya. It's sunshine in a bottle for me too :) we're relocating though so I am hoping to actually get some regular sun soaked vitamin D.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I hear yah! When I lived in cloudy climate I yearned for the sun. I think full spectrum lights in the house help too?

  51. I've been on Vit D3 (3,000) for about 6 months now and it's making a big difference! So is the fact THIS rainy season hasn't been so rainy!

  52. The vitamin D defieciency problem is more serious than we think ... that's because vitamin D is not only a vitamin but a hormone as well ....its effects on our body are phenomenal...we need a lot more than originally thought ...the sun is actually the best source of vitamin known of ...foods rich in the vitamin are dairy products and milk so its good to eat or drink these however the supplement is necessary when we can't or don't get the actual source ...remember to take it with something such as yogurt, peanut butter, milk or pudding because its a fat soluable vitamin ...the vitamin itself is stored in the liver (lets make sure our liver is healthy ) ... one ofthe most informative websites to study this necessary vitamin /hormone is www.vitamindcouncil.org...this website is dedicated to provideing people with accurate information on the vitamin along with updated stuff as well ...have a great day and lets look forward to spring
