Quilty stuff

Remember all my scraps? I finally put some of them to good use.

The backing is a vintage cotton sheet. Such a lucky thrift store find.

I made this little thing mostly to practice my free motion quilting. And because I found the old Halloween tea towel in my fabric stash. And because I've been meaning to do something with it.

Finally, ever wanted to make a wonky log cabin quilt?

Head over to the Old Red Barn Co. Quilt Along Flickr group and join in. Quilt Dad (A.K.A. John) is going to teach us how.

Come on. You know you wanna.

Your scrappy quilt is just gorgeous...and the sheet is perfect. Do you do anything special when you use a sheet as backing? Do you use regular batting - which one?

aw, that's so cool - and what a great sheet backing! PS - great DOF in the first picture, I love the blurry flowers ;)

Ok, this is amazing... please tell me more about free motion quilting!!! Do you draw it on, or just go for it and pray that you don't screw up? 'Cause I sure don't see any screw ups on this lovely!!! I'm stuck in stipple mode and even getting to that took a leap of faith!

Oh, I love your scrappy quilt!! Isn't it funny how we buy pieces of perfectly good fabric specifically to cut them up -- a practice our great grandmothers no doubt would have been appalled with?

Me? A Mom? said...

Practice? Um. i don't think you need any practice. it looks AMAZING! And way to go on the sheet. It's perfect for the project. I love finding stuff like that.

Dana, your scrappy quilt is amazing. I always shy away from using bedsheets as backings, but I think the one you've chosen for yours is just perfect. Thanks for sharing@

Okay, I thought I was so "smart" and "original" for cutting my scraps into squares, too, but it looks like I'm part of smart "club" instead. I'm in good company!! Here is how I got started on the scrap square thing:

I still think it's a genius way of controlling the chaos--even if it's not original! :)

I love the backing sheet...you could use it either way :) Beautiful, and the Ween towel is great too :) *sigh* Wish my little quilt had turned out as good... lol

I'm with Me? A Mom...you don't need practice...you got it!:) That quilt is fabulous, I am just so uncoordinated when it comes to FMQ...I think I have conquered straight lines with my walking foot. I actually quilted my other zig zag today and used the guide that came with the walking foot...it is fabulous....and I love the term "organic lines"...so much nicer than crooked!:)
I cut out my wonky fabric yesterday and I'm ready to start!:)

Love that sheet and your quilting is beautiful! I like using sheets for my backing when I'm making queen sized quilts for our beds :)

I LOVE your scrappy quilt! I have a weakness for scrappy quilts. And that backing is awesome, I had a pillowcase of that once, it made some pretty darn cute pillowcase dresses.

I wish I could join in the wonky log cabins, but I haven't even finished cutting out my zig zag quilt. Or my other millions of projects that I have started and not finished :)

I don't know how you do it but everything you put together is amazing!

Your scrap quilts look divine, while mine look like a crayon bucket threw up!

You rock lady ;) Everything is beautiful as usual!

Wow Dana that is just fabulous!!! I can't stop looking at it. The different squares look just perfect and the backing sheet is just perfect too. All in all a wonderful quilt. I really want to make one now too!

I purely, truely just love your site. Your posts are short, sweet, simple and to the point, and your photos and quilting are so awesome. Quick question, what size squares did you use for the scrap pieces? Love that backing too, just gorgeous!

oh, oh , oh, i just LOVE your scrap quilt. good old fashioned patchworks are just my favorite. saw a quilt at state fair this past week that about made me drool on the spot i wanted it so badly....sort of a medallion shape overlappy sort of thing all just patchworky colors and patterns. SIGH. so dreamy. just need to knit my mother something for her birthday and then i think i am going to tackle ellerie's... fall seems like the perfect time to start a quilt :-) ahem. i am SURE that is why i've put it off so long.

Love, love, love the quilt. I started cutting and sewing stacked coins just cause i was itchy to quilt. Maybe I need to do a log cabin square. I'm having a great deal of difficulty focusing these days. Hmmmm... time to run or sew.

I am in love.....and I want to come and live in your scrap pile....don't worry, I do not eat much :)

love your kitty's too....

one day you are going to have to do a FAQ post (if you haven't already that is)....I think a lot of us novice/beginner quilters have a ton of questions for you....like what batting do you use, thread....silly stuff, but we all want to know....hehehehe

Okay first of all, that was the best find for the sheet at a thrift store...score!!! The wonky log cabin looks like fun!!! Thanks!!
