Big ole' pinwheels

My latest quilt and the largest one I've ever quilted myself (70"x85"). It was a lot to wrestle with but seeing it now I am sure glad I did.

The fabric is from Moda and called 1974. I adore this line. And I'm kind of fond of this quilt. A little bit. A tad. Just a smidgen really.

The back is Kona medium gray.

I am starting to have a real affection for gray. I cannot think of a single color that does not look lovely next to gray. Tangerine and gray? Ah, yes. Turquoise and gray? You betcha. Apple green and gray? For sure. Oh! I know!! Chocolate brown, gray and white. Hmmmm . . . something tells me I'm not done with gray.

Nope. Not anytime soon anyway.

Love, love, love 1974, and I love your quilt! Seriously, they need to re-release that line, I don't think people realized how awesome it was until it was gone...

Ahhh... you love EVERY color and gray? How about my natural hair color and gray?

Didn't think so!

Pinwheels are my FAVORITE! I made a pinwheel quilt from 1974 fabric too. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/35981592@N04/3854145545/in/set-72157621848951105/)

Brilliant quilters think alike, huh?

It's great how the quilt perfectly coordinates with the decorative stars on your house! LOVE IT!

This is gorgeous! Perfect way to show off the beautiful prints :) And grey is a fave of mine too! I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with all my 1974 fabric that I've been hoarding like a little squirrel hehe

Ooohh - I am sooo scared to quilt my top I just finished. It too is large - 85" x 85"!! I haven't quilted anything by myself before and am wondering if I should do a few little things first - table runners etc.

I adore this quilt and I think I need to check out this line of fabric too. Someone mentioned it isn't available anymore??

Well done!!!

I love grey/gray (I think it can be spelled both ways!) too!! I love wearing it, actually. What size are your pinwheels? I love this quilt and the fabric, too!

Fanfreakintastic Dana!!:) Yepster Doodle...grey is where it's at!:) Did you see the black and white and grey fabrics on my Flickr that I want to use to make a quilt for my husband? I want to add solid grey, black and white blocks to the patterns.

Why oh why is it you all make these fabulous quilts out of fabrics that are no longer being made?:)

Oh this is so cute! I love it!
I too have also been loving the grays. Just yesterday I found some of the most perfect gray with white polka dot fabric that I am in love with! I am thinking I need to build up my gray stash!

Love it! And I love the way the decorative stars in the background coordinate too!

Oh I just love it!! Beautiful!!!!!! Don't you just love those half triangles?? I have a charm pack of the 1974 and I can't wait to make something with it when things calm down around here!! Maybe after I finish up some UFO's!!!!! My last quilt was a pinwheel too!!!! I am thinking about gray now too!!!!

Yellow + gray!! The brighter the yellow and the darker the gray, dramatic! Add a touch of silver, aaaahhhh.
The pinwheels are beautiful!

Gray has become my new "go to" neutral. I just love it. I have a bolt of Kona Coal. It seems to find its way into nearly everything I make!

LOVE this!! I also love 1974 and have been hoarding some of it...charms and a layer cake. Do tell what you used for this quilt. I might have to 'copy' you. You know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right??? :D I see others use gray and think about it but haven't jumped in with that yet...maybe this would do it for me. :D

Oh yes! Grey is my new black. I can't get enough of it, both in sewing and in my clothes.

LOVE this quilt and it matches your stars perfectly!

Gorgeous as always.

Isn't amazing how many different COLORS of gray there are? You could have a field day with an all gray quilt. Love the pinwheels and, wow, you quilted that thing to a fairtheewell and it looks terrific--all crinkled and pre-loved!

I probably shouldnt be admitting this, considering the rather large gathering of quilters you have, but I dont always "get" quilts. A LOT of the time I look at one and think....thats not really working for me...hmmm...anyways, my point is, that I have never looked at a quilt before and thought, "this is absolutely beautiful" but I did when I saw this! Seriously, I am envious of this thing! Great job!

Heather Jones said...

Oh my goodness, that is just gorgeous. Did you use a long arm maching to quilt it? Fantastic job, and very inspiring!

I've never seen this fabric before, really cute. I love love love your color pairings for each pinwheel block. I truly want this quilt for myself... I have not felt this drawn to a quilt in awhile - wanna send it my way? ;)

Hi,

Love the quilt and agree about the colour gray. On my blog I have a picture of my gray quilt. www.quiltinfairy.blogspot.com.

But I love the stars on the wall behind the quilt. Can't get them in Australia and it makes me sad.

Your pinwheel quilt is so huggable Dana, pinwheels are my favourite. As for grey, I'm lovin' it right now. It sits so beautifully with virtually every other colour. And I know, I've just finished a mini quilt for a S.T.U.D. swap on Flickr. The theme was rainbows, so there's a rainbow of colour in it, held together with, well yes, grey!

Absolutely Gorgeous!!!

Dana,
Your pinwheel quilt is AMAZING! I just made one double pinwheel square for a monthly swap and your masterpiece has inspired me to make a million more (well, you know what I mean).
THANK YOU for being inspirational!

I'm a lurker on your blog and have no idea how to contact you other than to leave a comment.

(I LOVE that pinwheel quilt! When I first started quilting, all I did were pinwheels! I still LOVE them!)

Anyways... I'm the captain of a team that walks in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. 60 miles in 3 days. We raise gobs of money for breast cancer research -- We've raised over $270,000 total from the last four years.

This year we are producing a Quilts for the Cure calendar, and I thought it might be something you'd be interested in helping with.
