Better butter (Post #199)

Made the butter today. Thought I was slicker than snot and first put the aforementioned fresh cream in a large mason jar. Figured I could shake it until it became butter.

That lasted about 15 minutes. My arms began to ache.

I transferred it to the standing mixer. It mixed and mixed and mixed. And, then it mixed some more.

At this point I googled "how to make butter". Well, who knew that the cream needed to be at room temperature? Umph. I just let it mix and mix and mix and figured eventually it would do it's thing. About 40 minutes later this is what I got.

Now we're talking. Yellow butter. White buttermilk. Bingo!

Ain't it purty?

Tasty too.

P.S. Tomorrow is the big 200. Be there or be square.

I think butter is it's own food group, and what a lovely food group it is! That does look so yummy. Hey it's tomorrow where I am, so happy 200th post! I'll be checking back later.

I have been wanting to do this with Jack. But I was going to try the jar method. I think the mixer might be a much better idea.

Uggghhh, slicker that snot? That sounds really nasty!

But, the butter looks really tasty. The cow is cute too.

It's been YEARS since we did that, and it was so fun! Thanks for the reminder to try it again. Last time, we kind of took turns shaking 'til our arms gave out :-)

You can do butter in a jar...just add a marble or pebble. Shake until the marble stops rattling, then keep shaking till it starts rattling again. check it and if it is still not as thick as you would like...you guessed it...keep shaking!!
I wouldn't do more than about 300mls at a time. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

Yeah! it looks beautiful! I will have to try the mason jar technique (allowing for room temp). I priced those little jar churns from lehman's once and they are so expensive!! Thanks for the butter post. Just found your blog and will bookmark it and visit again. :)

Isn't freshly churned butter the best thing in the whole world??? A dash of salt, and a couple of pieces of toast, and YUMMO!

(Gonna have to stalk me a milk cow!!)

the butter looks beautiful. I't makes me think of when I was a little kid and lived on a farm, we used to make butter in this antique glass and metal butter churn. But we had Jersey cows, well two cows it was only a small farm. Lovely blog.

Thanks for the reminder to make butter again, it looks so creamy and good. Where did you get your glass butter keeper? I am assuming it inverts into the glass square with ice. I love it.

It does look yummy! I remember making butter with boys when they were younger. I think I'll make some more this week. I don't anything ever tasted so good.

Be blessed, Lea

We've just started making our own at home, too, with our standing mixing. Our pictures of it mixing look very much like yours! It's so good, and I use the buttermilk to make bread. :)

I grew up on a farm, making our own butter. We had a hand-churner that looked like half of a gallon jar. It had a hand crank with a mixer inside. Worked "slicker than snot"! I can almost taste that homemade butter now ~ yum!!

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, yummy! I remember doing that as a kid in school...with the marble in the Mason jar. I think I might have to make some fresh butter....now if I could just find a cow!

PS...I love your blog! I'm gonna add it to my blogroll over at The Downtown Boutique!

That is too funny. I just made my first batch of butter for the season the other day and had the same luck. Hee hee. I can share a little secret an old farm wife shared with me. Sour cream makes the sweetest butter. She lived in the arid West and could just leave her cream out on the counter top over night and have nice sour cream in the morning. I live in the very humid Midwest so I add a lump of plain yogurt and let it get to room temp for a couple of hours. Then I make the butter from there. So tastey!
I also remembered too late that you can only do small amounts at one time when I turned around and had whipped cream flowing out of my mixer. It was too much fun to be back into butter.
