Managing the scraps

Back in January I decided to go through all of my scraps and start organizing. I cut 5 inch squares out of every bit that was large enough. Since then when I'm working on a quilt and have left over pieces, I immediately cut them into 5 inch squares.

Quite a sizable stack has accumulated.

I've also collected a stack of strips. And smaller, usable bits too. I see a Chinese coin quilt in my future with those.

Any guesses on what I'll be doing this weekend?

Excellent! That is a great idea! I should start doing that too. You can do a lot with a 5 inch square, can't you?

I'm excited to see what you make!

I found out that some of those smaller bits are the perfect size for little tee appliques.

Pretty colors, can't wait to see it finished.
What is the maximum size tou will cut into smaller pieces?
I'm always afraid I'll be sorry I cut it, but tired of sloppy fabric stacks.

I did this a while back too - the coin quilts go together so fast this way!

And you can make cute charm quilts with all those squares - I know it was a lot of work cutting them all out but worth it in the end!

Great idea for being trifty and creative. Am doing a bit of sorting and organising this weekend. Finally put together a big bookshelf storage unit for the craft room and need to jump back into creating again.

Looking at all those delicious fabrics together like that just makes me want to start a quilt. Does it take a long time to build up such a stash?

That's a fabulous idea - I think I shall steal it. :) It's a great way to be sure the fabric scraps aren't wasted, isn't it?

I love those stacks of fabric! Lucky you, you'll be quilting, right? Scrap quilts, coin quilts, oh what fun!

It's amazing what we can get out of scraps aka leftovers! I hope you'll visit my blog and scroll down to look at Boxy Stars. This was mainly strips from scraps. Then if you scroll farther down to a tea-dye crinkle 1/2 sq triangle little quilt...these are leftover bits from the big Boxy Star quilt. Good money paid for the fabric...I say we use it up! Have a great weekend!

Do you have a picture of a Chinese Coin quilt you can post? I am thinking I'll try one to use up some of my many scraps!

Enjoyed your blog.

What a great idea for your scraps! I'm a fairly new sewer, and don't even have that many scraps yet; but I'm going to keep that idea in the back of my mind, for the day (if it ever comes) that I make my first quilt.

by the way - I like the "Dream" song on your playlist; I hadn't heard of this artist before.

Dana I cut mine into 2.5" squares, if I have five of a colour, I turn them into 9 patch blocks and they are my 'leader ender project' so far, I think I have made about 40 bonus blocks this year alone.. they are 6.5" finished, so another 40 and I have a queen size irish chain quilt when I alternate them with another block! I love 'bonus blocks'...

take care

I am a newbie to sewing/quilting...just beginning to learn actually. I can't wait to see how your quilt turns out. By the way, I have come to love the song "Dream" from your playlist. :)

What an awesome idea. I have so much scrap material, AND I want to tackle my first quilt. So this is great. A friend of mine told me that I should start cutting squares out of my kids' clothing (that I am gonna trash and not handmedown) and making a memory quilt. I think I am going to do both.

Okay, I thought I was so "smart" and "original" for doing this, too, but it looks like I'm part of smart "club" instead. I'm in good company!! Here is how I got started on the scrap square thing:

I still think it's a genius way of controlling the chaos--even if it's not original! :)
