As we rounded a bend in the road.
On our latest road trip.
Miles and miles of cotton.
So naturally we stopped to take photos. I grabbed the camera while everyone else made their way out of the van. I rushed to the barb wire fence and leaned in as far as I could go.
And then Licious sauntered over and said, "Man! That is one big ant hill!"
::blink:: ::blink::
I was standing in said ant hill.
And proceeded to practically strip down naked. On the side of the highway. In no time flat.
Fire ants from south Georgia are a force not to be reckoned with.

oh nos! but ditto the great photos comment - I don't think I've ever seen a cotton field before!
I love seeing the pictures of the cotton fields. We had fields like that close to here and I used to pass them all the time going home. I loved to see how the fields went from being freshly plowed, to planted and then to full bloom (some years the cotton was so heavy it looked like acres and acres of snow!) and then harvested. I have actually seen them harvesting it. Not like when my dad was young and picked cotton for a penny a pound. He said it took a long time to get a pound of cotton! Now they have replaced those cotton fields with peanuts and it is so sad not to see the cotton there.
It was a funny story about the fire ants, although I know from experience it was not funny at the time!

I know what you mean about Georgia fire ants! One of the first things we have taught our children is to stay far away from ant hills!

Thanks so much for the cotton field pics. My "want to do this in my lifetime" list contains actually seeing a cotton field but living in Minnesota (snow storm going on currently) I will have to travel a ways south. You can keep the fire ants though!!

I grew up in south Georgia...and you're right, those fire ants are quite a force! I still love to go home and look at the cotton. The field next to my parents' house is full of it and the site never gets old. Glad you survived the ants...
Being and Alabama boy, I know about cotton fields AND fire ants. Cotton fields mean lots of back breaking hard work. However, it is lovely to look at the fields of white.

I've never seen cotton plants before, very pretty, they look almost like popcorn.
Ants, no fun! But I bet it was quite a funny scene! :)

One time we were walking by a store that had cut cotton stalks as a display and my husband wanted to nick them hahaha! I made him put them down and walk away.
Beautiful photos! I am glad you got them in before you discovered the ants! Although I do feel for you... I don't know that particular type of ant but the regular ones are bad enough! I hope you did not get bitten too much and I would have done exactly the same and stripped off!!! It's a good job it wasn't me as I am allergic to antbites so being bitten by a few big uns would probably have finished me off... Thanks for the photos. That is the first time I have seen it close up! Beautiful!

Cotton fields may be a usual site down south but here in Iowa, where corn and soybeans grow, most of us have never seen a field of cotton! Except my aunt. She planted seeds one year just to see how the plants grow.
I love cotton! It's my favorite! I love the way it looks when its ready to be 'harvested' but I don't get to see it as often as I would like - even living in the heart of NC. Such pretty photos!
I fell into a fire ant hill as a kid once, while wearing jeans. My mom stripped me down in front of all my schoolmates, so that was doubly traumatic for me. My legs were covered in ant bites. I hope you didn't get bit too many times, but I must say, it was worth it for the lovely pics you took.

Thanks for those pics. They brought back great memories of my Grandparents who farmed cotton in west Tenn. their entire lives. We live in MI, and every summer we all went to TN and picked cotton. Now there's a job that didn't pay well but it made for a great childhood memory!

We lived in Wyoming (now back) and there was always lots of snow. When we moved to Alabama, there of course was no snow...but lots of cotton fields. My children call that their Alabama snow. I also do not miss fire ants!
Fire ants are awful! So sorry you stepped in them! But I love the cotton fields...
