Princess & the Pea

Last night I stood in the back of a sold out theater and watched my daughters act, sing, dance and do things that I never would have had the confidence to do at their ages.  My big, toothy grin did little to hide the tears streaming down my face. Or muffle the beating of my heart high in my chest.

It's true that I swelled with pride for my girls.  But I was equally full for each and every kid on that stage.  As a parent to two of them I know how long and hard they've worked to reach opening night.

I was engrossed in the story but during one scenery change I remembered where I was. In this tiny rural community where statewide budget concerns cut extra deeply.  Among family and friends who see the value of art and find a way to pull together and do whatever it takes to make these rich opportunities available for our youth.

In a sea of like minded folks.

Just as beaming and proud as I.

And I especially loved that even though I was standing in the very back I could clearly hear Nana whistling her famous whistle at each and every whistle worthy moment.

Beautiful. I'm choked up, myself, just reading this. Among my very favorite things, at the top of the list, actually!, has always been watching my children in their element. Wonderful , wonderful post! Thank you, I needed it today.

Amazing. My daughter would be so jealous, she is currently working on a program for her school, but there are never costumes, and very little funding goes into it, which disappoints her greatly. I wish there were more like minded people in my community. Congrats, they look lovely, and must have worked very hard.

Well written that lovely tribute to the hard work of a community that understands the importance of art.

Yay for the littles doing such a great work.

Yes, Dana, I'd be sniffling and beaming while cheering that talented group to the finish line of a great production.

Amen! That's just awesome, Dana.

It'd be nice if more people realized that the economy needs to do well but art and life itself are far more precious than dollars.

Love it! I directed the Middle School version of Once Upon a Mattress, and loved every minute of it - I think what the kids experience is magic and does so much for them.

Sounds like a wonderful time. Glad that Nana and Papa were able to enjoy it with you also. I think I could of probably heard that whistle in Northern Pennsylvania if I had went outside.

How wonderful! Your girls are so well balanced...dancing, singing, acting, competing in racing and biking, and having the self confidence to do it all :0). Good job Mom! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on how a mother's heart just overflows to watch her children out in the world, you made me feel like I was there.

Happy sewing
