Fourty one ramblings

1.  Razor bought me two new orchid plants.

2.  I never had orchids before last February.

3.  I always thought they were a bit too fussy for me.

4.  Come to find out though, I love orchids.

5.  I love how long their blooms last.

6.  When I was about twelve years old I rode in a Goodyear Blimp.

7.  No lie.

8.  We rode it over Los Angeles.

9.  When I was twelve I was probably more annoyed about the whole thing than I was thrilled.

10.  I know this because I have a thirteen year old.

11.  Tell me you have a thirteen year old too.

12.  Please?

13.  I attended the University of Missouri for undergraduate school.

14.  Majored in European History.  Minored in Spanish.

15.  Can't speak Spanish.

16.  Probably could order a beer.

17.  And ask where el bano is if necessary.

18.  The above photo is of a new flower stalk on the orchid that I received in February 2012.

19.  I'm giddy that I was able to get my very first orchid to grow new flower stalks.

20.  Emphasis on stalks as you can see in the photo below there is the second stalk.

21.  Guess orchids aren't too fussy after all.

22.  I've sewn two quilt tops since Christmas.

23.  Will be finishing up my third today.

24.  I'm still a fierce Missouri Tiger fan even though we haven't lived there since 2000.

25.  I moved around a bunch as a kid.

26.  Colorado, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas.

27. I went to law school at the University of Missouri - Kansas City.

28.  Most people think Kansas City is in Kansas.

29.  Well, there is a Kansas City, Kansas.

30.  But the bigger city is Kansas City, Missouri.

31.  I was an assistant prosecuting attorney there for four years.

32.  And now I'm a mom, soap maker, and quilter living in rural America.

33.  Couldn't be happier with that last one.

34.  Razor is from Missouri.

35.  I know down deep in my bones how lucky I am that he has moved with me.

36.  The kids are home from school today due to flooding.

37.  Who ever heard of a "flood day"?

38.  Spending time at home with my family is my favorite thing.

39.  My kids are big on naming favorite things.  Favorite food.  Favorite fruit.  Favorite song.  Favorite game.  Favorite this.  Favorite that.

40.  Happy coincidence that my kids are home in the middle of the week.

41.  Cause today is my birthday and I couldn't think of anything better than to spend it with them.

Happy Birthday! I've lived with 13 year olds and it's not fun. Fortunately, it doesn't last long! They do come out the other side.

Happy Happy Birthday Dana! My son is a lover of orchids - he has at least one blooming all the time. I've lived with thirteen year olds - remember - this too shall pass - and quicker than you would have liked once you get on the other side. My grandbabies were over for hugs and kisses and dancing last night - I couldn't be happier!

Happy Birthday Dana! I hope you have a wonderful day with your family :) What a special treat having the girls home!

I had to laugh at your story about the blimp. My dad is a pilot and when I was around 13 he borrowed an aerobatic plane and did all sorts of tricks while we were in the air. Spirals, rolls, flying upside down ... you name it! He still talks about how unimpressed and bored I looked through the whole thing. It sure takes a lot to impress a teenager.

Happy birthday! I'm so jealous you got to ride the blimp. My daughter lives in LA & I looked into it recently & it's not available to the public now. They are always up there so I'm not sure who gets to tide!
Have a great day!

Happy birthday to you! What a great way to post on your birthday. (might have to try this on my next birthday - 45 ramblings, gasp!) And how lucky to have the kids home to spend it with you, making it feel even more special. I wondered if the 41 ramblings meant something, and then I got to ramble #41. Wait, you went to law school? and practiced as a prosecuting attorney? I had no idea! So fascinating to learn some new tid-bits in that list. Enjoy your day!

Happy, Happy Birthday! I've never had much luck with reblooming but do love orchids. No moving around for me but I did know that Kansas City is in MO...really only because my sister lives in MO! 13 year olds are fun, frustrating, and forever surprising. Even the boy ones :) Have a wonderful day!

Happy Birthday! No 13 year olds here (yet!), just an almost 7 year old and a 3 1/2 year old who both think they are going on 13.

Oh, Dana, Happy Birthday. If I didn't know it before (which I did), I am now certain of our kindred spirithood.

Happy, happy birthday! I lived through 2 13 yr olds...we made it, they are 29 and 31 now, and they thank me for being the kind of mom I was then, with rules and boundaries and goooooood cookin' that I always insisted was eaten at a sit-down dinner with the 4 of us there. You're doing GREAT! I loved this post, so many cool things about you I didnt know. I can't speak more than the bare essentials of Spanish either and I took it formally for 6 years in school...ah well, "mas cerveza, por favor" has served me well enough... funny how I become more fluent as the number of cervezas consumed increases...hahaha!

Happy Birthday Dana and your orchids are beautiful. My Grandparents came from Independence Missouri, there parents from Marysville, KS. I so want to visit that area, I've been once but only for a quick funeral. You have three quilt tops done already, speedy. Can't wait to see them. I have vowed to not start anything new until the UFO"s are done. I wonder if I can keep that vow! Have fun with the kiddos!

HaHa! you're too funny!
It's amazing the life we leave behind to be a mom, isn't it?
but I don't regret it either. Working as a lawyer must have prepared you for teenagers--I'd say you have an advantage :)

Happy Birthday friend!

Happy Birthday! I turned 40 exactly one week ago, and I was once an attorney mostly defending pharmaceutical manufacturers for a living, but now I'm a mom and quilter (no soap) in small-town America. And I love to stay home. And my school child (my oldest) is dismissing early for ice today. He is not 13, alas.

I hope your birthday is wonderful.

Happy Birthday Dana!!! Enjoy that 13 year old while you can, soon they get to be 17 they grumble about everything. Love the orchids and I am so impressed--I have never gotten one to keep growing after the flowers died. Woo Hoo for you!!

Happiest of birthdays! My step-daughter is 13. She spent an entire day over Christmas break in her bedroom, turning down invitations to fun activities. Sledding? No. Going to the store? No. Trip to the mall? No. Then I look on Instagram, and she has been posting all day about how bored she is. Ha.

Happy Birthday Dana! We are Missouri tiger fans too. Hubby got his bachelors degree there. Born and raised in KCMO, now living in the triangle of NC and glad of it. Nice to know a fellow tiger. And yes, I often tell folks it is Kansas City MISSOURI!

Happy birthday!! (Sorry I'm late!) I've always thought that folks from Missouri (or lived there for a length of time) were nice… When I was ten and we got stuck in traffic on the very busy freeway in St. Louis, locals not only gave us directions but let us into their lane so that we could be sure to get the right exit. My buddy Nate was from Kansas City, MO.

You were an attorney? Cool. Now I can make all those habeus corpus jokes I've been saving up. :-)

I loved reading your list, getting to know you better, so to speak. Though I'm all for higher education, I think it fantastic that you chose raising and nurturing a family over a law career. Happy belated birthday, Dana!
