Farm fresh (Post #198)

Just the other day I was lucky enough to find a source for local milk. Yep. Straight from the cow.

This is part of the farm.

And, this is the very barn where the lovely Guernsey is milked.

Razor and I were so excited we practically did the happy dance right there at the farm. And we sooo took a big swig on the short drive back home. Mmmmmm-mmmmm good! Like creamy delicious ice cream right in a glass. I poured the cream off the top (nearly 3 cups) and plan to make some butter with it today.

What a delicious life.

-Dana

P.S. The photo of the Guernsey cow is not my own. Rather an image that popped up on Google when I searched for how to spell Guernsey. Just keepin' it real. We didn't get to go to the barn and see the cows but we plan to soon. That is when you'll my see photos of the bovine beauties.

How are you allowed to get fresh milk?! It's illegal here to sell it straight from the cow... Of course there are ways... I think that's so cool you're going to make some butter with that cream! So cool!

Wonderful ! I've got beautiful cows just in the prairie next to my house (our neighbour is a farmer), and I love watching them : they're sooo peaceful...

THANKS for your kind email, I couldn't answer you since you're set on "no-reply". Of course I'll check your Blog - and not only for the giveaway :>)

Smiles !

the picture of the guernsey cow brought back good memories. My dad was a dairy farmer for 20 years, 17 of which I was a child there. We pastuerized our own milk every 2 days for our own use. In the 1940's we made our own butter too.

When Miss C was little, we took her to the dairy to feed the baby calves - one of my favorite memories!

The stone tower in the background was kind of a giveaway that it wasn't a pic from the US . . . (:

Thank you to those concerned about unpasturized milk. We don't do anything that would put our family in harms way. :)

When I was about 7 my Dad said if I learned to milk a cow he would give me my very own heifer in calf.
So I did, and so he did.
WHAT A MILLSTONE!!!!!!
Mum used to make butter every few days, using the Mixmaster - we lived on fresh cream, buckets of milk and that butter!
Couldnt drink it warm tho...
Doesn't it all taste so much better than shop stuff?

Dana,

There is nothing like milk straight from the cow. They are selling it here in Ontario too, but there is a huge protest by the dairies and the government. It's about time the farmer's started getting the money for their work instead of third parties.

Glad you found a place to buy it. Looking forward to your bovine photos.

Blessings,
Mary

Greetings from the island of Guernsey original home of the Guernsey Cow!

The picture of the cow has been taken in Guernsey at L'ancress Common. I can tell by the Martello Tower in background.

My family used to keep Guernsey Cows on our old farm, but alas no more.

Glad that the old Guern is doing well overseas :-)

The beautiful photo of a Guernsey cow is what brought me to your blog, and I enjoyed reading your posting (and the various comments). As a photographer, I am always a bit frustrated when folks right-click and use my copyrighted material. Yes, I know I should be flattered --- but I make money selling the photographs, not giving them away.

Yes, you did say that the cow photo was not yours. But if you open the image in Photoshop (or similar) and look at the embedded information (what's called EXIF/IPTC information) you'd see that the photograph is copyrighted by Chris George of the Guernsey Press.

You might want to contact them and ask for permission to use the image on your blog. My guess is that they would say "yes" as you're not using the image commercially.

I don't want to be an old man, adding a discordant note to a happy blog --- so feel free to delete this comment.

Mooooo!
