Upon my kitchen counter sits a bowl of jalapenos. That I grew. That I grew with the intent to can them. That I grew with the intent to can and enjoy all winter long. The poor jalapenos have been sitting in a bowl on my counter for so long that they have turned red and are beginning to dry up.
Pitiful.
At least they look cute next to the kitschy gnome sign I found at a local thrift shop.
Can you say slacker?

Yeah, I have the same problem with vegetables that I intend to do far less with than can and find myself unmotivated. Could you hang them up or spread them on a cookie sheet in a low oven to finish the drying process? Dried peppers can be good, especially in tomato sauce... (or is that too much like non-slacker work?)
But that gnome sign is kitschy in all the right ways. Love it!
It's okay I have a bowl of peppers too and I still have some on the plant and I don't know what to do with them. I thought about jalapeno jelly but it takes 4 cups of sugar! Yikes!
I was just going to suggest the same thing. If you put them on a cookie rack and then dry them in the oven at about 200 for a while until they are all dry and then put them in baggies in the freezer, you are no longer a slacker but clever and provident for the winter months.
At least that's what I told myself.
I'm going to send you the two red jalepenos I have sitting by my sink too!!
I decided to can some apple pie filling instead.
How are you?!
Yep, yep, yep....like it was said above....hang them from a string either as a swag or like a bunch of garlic....wonderful xmas decoration and useful!:)
I still have peaches sitting in the freezer that are waiting to be peeled, sliced & popped into bags for smoothies...I picked them, put them in the garage to finish ripening and forgot all about them!!
awww the poor peppers have lost their pep--but according to some of the other comments, they're still salvageable... I think they would've been tossed by now if they were in my kitchen--hubby doesn't like things just sittin' around :)
There just never seems to be enough time for all we want to accomplish...does there?
Hi Dana,
yes.... i think they are still "selvedge-able"
how were you going to can them? i'm thinking a recipe should appear somewhere??

I love following your blog. I am amazed at how much many times I find myself thinking "yeah, I've done that too!".
Last year I intended to pickle my jalepanos, and didn't do it. This year it was the beats. I ended up composting those guys.
Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy it.
I've thrown away more food from lack of use. I feel so guilty!

Hey Dana - I have a few on my counter and a few still on the plant outside... we never figured out what to do with them yet...
At least they made it to the counter, I have a plant outside still that I haven't dug up yet with red peppers all over it that have now been snowed on :)
Cute gnome sign!
i can. and it is my middle name.
I could say slacker, but then I would remind myself that you actually planted, cared for, and harvested a pepper plant. That would make me the slacker :)
I can not only say slacker but immitate it as well!!!
ha ha - I have a bowl full of jalapenos AND anaheims that I was gonna use for salsa... they're almost completely dried up. I'm thinking of stringing them together to make a nice little decoration now, if I can get around to that...
Hi. .
Just found your blog through "Quilting with Debbie", and am enjoying reading and catching up. I had to comment on your gnome sign, I love those little gnomes, and have several wandering around my house, inside AND out !
Keep up the good work with your blog, and stop over and read mine sometime when you have time !

dana-
put them in a pretty bottle with a top and pour vinegar in it to cover the peppers. the vinegar will absorb the flavor of the peppers and they won't go to waste! you can use the vinegar to flavor salsa, soups, whatever! hope this comment doesn't come to late!
