Have you seen the Block of the Month on Craftsy?

Blog Tour Button

When Amy Gibson of Stitchery Dickory Dock asked if I'd take a minute and mention the Block of the Month that she hosts on Craftsy I immediately said yes.

Photobucket
This is Amy. So. Stinkin'. Cute. I can't stand it.

My online quilting experience has been so deep and rich and I'm happy to see new avenues popping up that bring more crafters/quilters to the table.  I'm fairly well entrenched in the modern use of social media to share images, ideas, and inspiration for quilt design.  Living in a rural area like I do if I want to connect with others on the topic of quilting I pretty much have to rely on social media.  But, if you're brand new to the online quilting arena it can be an intimidatingly large nut to crack.  Meaning, where do you start?  How do you learn how to quilt via your computer and Internet connection??

Photobucket

No doubt about it, Amy's Block of the Month is a great place to start.  There are (or will be, it is only March after all!) thirteen video installments that introduce and teach step-by-step instructions on different techniques, how to make different blocks, assembly of a quilt top, quilting and binding.

Oh, and um . . . it's totally free!
Photobucket

Once you've got those skill under your belt you are off to the races.  Shooting for the stars!  The sky is the limit as they say.
Honest to goodness it's a great place to start.  And I suspect you'll make a friend or two in the process.

Photobucket

Of course no good review is complete without a giveaway, Fat Quarter Shop is donating a $25 gift certificate to one lucky winner.  Leave your comment and tell me a little bit about your online quilting experience for your chance to win.  One comment per person.  International entries welcome.  Comments accepted through March 19, 2012.  Winner announced Tuesday, March 20, 2012.  Winner will be selected by random draw.

Where would my quilting be without the online community?.... This is where I get my inspiration. Beautiful work.

I don't belong to any in-person quilt groups, so most of my ideas and knowledge comes from online sources. It was blogs that got me interested in quilting in the first place!

I spend time everyday looking at different quilter's blogs for ideas, patterns, and inspiration. There are so many different techniques and tips - someone out there has probably been in your shoes and can walk you through it.

I learned to quilt by checking out different quilting blogs and groups. I've become involved with several flickr groups and online quilting bess. This has helped me learn new techniques and to step out of my comfort zone and try something new all the time. I don't think I could survive without the online quilting community:)

Online communities are where I get most of my support in sewing/fiber arts. The nearby community is scattered anymore, so online access [suppliers, classes, blogs] is an incredible blessing. I've been wanting to quilt for years and loving that there is this much support available online.

I've really enjoyed looking at others' ideas on blogs, and also info on retailers' websites. The internet is sure a great place to search and find exactly what I'm looking for, too.

I learned to quilt before I knew about quilting blogs and sites. But now I regularly read blogs and love the inspiration but also the feeling of community. These people actually get me. I love it when I 'run into' other busy moms like me who also find time to quilt and sew.

I love to read blogs online and look at the lovely pictures for inspiration. I would love to write a blog, but just can't seem to get it going and keep it going. I do the majority of my fabric shopping online. Sometimes I can't pull myself away from the shopping & picture gawking to quilt enough myself!

Thanks for the giveaway!

I started quilting on my own in Alaska after having my first baby. It was so hard for me to read the directions from a book. I would skip a sentence that would end up being VERY important or other messes!

So I started blogging also and found Flickr via rachel from PS I QUILT. There, started my first bee and Ive been in no less than 15 bees, quite a few swaps and love them all!
I would not have wonderful friends that I have, and even met a few, if not for the online flickr and blogging.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I started bloging a few years ago, , I visit the many beautiful blogs I admire how much dedication put into them and feel a little bit guilty of how much inspiration I get. I learn, I copy, I adapt and feel like I can also create. I will never be able to dedicate so much time to blogging and crafting but I can say that I feel fortunate to have internet.

Craftsy is a wonderful site. And, I'm following the BOM videos; but, haven't started sewing yet. I will. Someday! :-)

I used to chat on mIRC when there was a quilt chat group. I did swaps and have a fun time! Then, mIRC gave way to other online venues and I went off to college and didn't have time. But, I've been back in the quilting world for a couple years now. :-)

Anyway, Thank you for a chance to win.

Social media has been huge in my quilting experience! I work full time and every single guild close by me meets during the week days. I've been quilting about 25 years, and have made many friends; however, one of the most interesting, enjoyable things about the online experience is shrinking the entire globe down to the size of my computer screen! I've communicated with people all over, discovered new sites, fabrics, ideas, designers, and it's never ending.

So glad that new quilters are coming on board. New ideas, and new blood keep all of us learning, and the art moves forward!

I have been learning the majority of how to quilt from all the wonderful bloggers online. We have a serious lack of quilting classes in my area that anyone who is disabled can attend. I found plenty of places to take classes locally but they are all either upstairs or downstairs with no accomodation for those who aren't able to navigate stairs. VERY frustrating but I did find one place and did take hers although I was not super pleased with the lack of instruction we were given so back to the online world I went. Without the online quilting community I am sure I'd have given up even trying.

As I have no one to quilt with or to ask questions to so I learn by seeing & reading online. This is an amazing group on quilters online! :)

Hmmm...my online quilting experience? Read, bookmark, click a link...follow that blog, read, bookmark, see an interesting tutorial, click that link, read, bookmark..etc. Look at the clock, oh my the day is gone and I haven't sewn a stitch! LOL

Seriously, I am a relatively new quilter--only two quilt tops to my name, haven't yet figured out the quilting part. However, I find at least five new projects a day I want to start. And just as many blogs that inspire me and my bookmarked list grows! I am trying to figure out a system for checking them all and still having time to actually paly with fabric again!

I am signed up for Amy's class, and about five QALs--I also just found those this year....So I am behind on everything--oh and the house is a mess now too! I mean, how can housecleaning interfere with creative inspiration?

I love the online quilting community. I shop for supplies online and keep up with the new fabrics, patterns and notions out there. I have made on line friends and some became in-person friends.

My first online quilting experience was the rail fence quilt from the Old Red Barn Quilt Along...That quilt is currently on my bed thanks to you that was the first quilt I ever machine quilted. Thank you so much I love all of my online quilting friends.

Thanks for all of the wonderful inspiration you have provided, and thanks for the chance to win.

I know the internet quilting community has played a huge part in my growing as a quilter, but what I use it the most for is inspiration. It's so awesome to be able to look at similar quilts made up with so many different colors and fabrics. I have a hard time visualizing how things will turn out, so it is a huge help!

My online quilting started with Flickr groups like mini quilt and old red barn co quilt along. I learned all the basics through you, so thanks muchly woman:)

Dana - Thank you to Amy and all the blogger who have made this experience SO MUCH FUN. I don't wan this to be over--when is the next blog hop? I was fortunate to win at Sew Paint Create, but as a non-blogger I have really enjoyed visiting so many sites and learning so much. That's quite an accomplishment for this retired Home Ec teacher. Learning never stops, it's an ongoing process. When you stop learning or being excited about sewing/creating, then you need to worry! Thanks again for all you have given us.

Doing quilt-a-longs online, boms online, etc. have gotten me to where I am as a quilter. The support and encouragement of the online quilting community is not only amazing, it's nearly the only thing that ramps me up enough to keep me going.

I can't get enough of quilters who showcase their talents on blogs! It is where I get 99% of my inspiration :)

After a lull of several years I am finally back to quilting again and completed 7 quilts in the month of feb. A lot of pent up creativity spilling out me right now. So happy to find the online community and the fat quarter store. Grannyo

This would be so fun to win! I was recently telling my husband how much fun I had doing the quilt along with you back at the beginning-the three quilts I made for my grandgirls! (Oh,and the circle quilt I did with the leftovers that started my whole blogging life!!)Love all the inspiration online, just wish I had more time to actually SEW!!

In all honesty you are the reason I have become a diehard quilty person. I saw your first quiltalong a few years ago and made a quilt from that (after the quiltalong was over) and I have been hooked ever since. I have several quilt blogs I follow and get lots of inspiration and ideas from that. I love the Moda Bake Shop and Moda Designers blogs. Even my twelve year old daughter is along for the ride making a pinwheel quilt (her second quilt)for 4-H Competition. We live in an area that doesn't have many shops, so I shop online and get great ideas for easy quilts. I also learned Knitting this way. It's funny that technology can be such an aid it keeping old crafts and arts alive!!

Great class so far, I'm happy to see it being promoted so widely!

I don't live really close to a quilt shop so my online experience has been invaluable. I have done a few of your quilt alongs and gained a lot of great information and a sense of accomplishment. Thanks for the giveaway!!

The on-line quilting community allows me to be in contact with people with refreshing ideas, while remaining at home.

I love all the visual inspiration I get from visiting quilting blogs from all over the world.
Thanks for the giveaway.

I got back into sewing by stalking the ORB Quilt Along group and then jumped in. Having people to bounce ideas off that are excited and care about fabric and design (rather than my husband) has been wonderful.

One of my goals this year was to play along in a QAL and KEEP UP! This 2-block a month deal is a great forum for that. And, even as an experienced quilter, I generally pick up a useful tip or two from each segment. Thanks for the feature. And, even though I'm not always able to keep up on your Flickr QALs, I always follow along. So fun. I'm determined to play along with the granny squares, though. So thanks again.
